Amanda Brugel

(February 27 2010 - Toronto ON) Pointe Claire is a secluded community in that part of the island of Montreal known as the West Island. This West Island, to those not familiar with it, is a vast region that runs from Lachine until the west. Amanda Brugel grew up on this island, and it is commonly referred to as her birthplace. However, she only stayed there for a short time. Brugel was raised in Courtice, just outside of Oshawa. The first goal she had was to pursue a career as an actress However, following a dramatic growth spurt her partners weren't able to dance along with her. In an article published in the Toronto Star she admitted In heels, I'm 6 feet one inch. When I surpassed any male partner, I stopped. A lot of former dancers go on to act. For Brugel, it was the encouragement of her drama teacher in high school who pushed her in the direction she wanted. The teacher was the one who suggested she audition to play the character of Anne in their annual school production. The school's production was a success and she was selected to play the lead character for Anne of Green Gables after she tried out. She was given an Fine Arts Talent Scholarship to go to York University's Theatre Program which she completed at the age of 20 with a degree of Bachelor's in Fine Arts. Over the past 20 years, her roles on television and the big screen have varied. Her role as Rita from the award-winning show The Handmaid's Tale was her most memorable. Brugel was only seen on a few instances in the initial season of The Handmaid's Tale. She was the sole Canadian participant.
